Inkjet vs. Laser Printers for Home Use

For the last couple of years, our printer had been experiencing hiccups on a regular basis. Sometimes it would print a single document over several pages because it pulled a few pieces of paper in at once. Sometimes it would start and stop at random intervals while printing a document. Additionally, there were certain colors it wouldn’t print, even when it had a new color ink cartridge.

Given our printer was over a decade old and had been used a lot, none of this was surprising. We began looking for a new one. A lot has changed since I last shopped for a printer, so there were many things for us to consider. One of the first considerations was whether to purchase an inkjet or laser printer.

I did a little research on this question. I’ve placed some of the info I found into a handy table because it might help some of you if you need to purchase a new printer.

Inkjet printers and laser printers both have benefits and drawbacks. What are these and which type of printer is best for home use?

Which is right for you is going to depend on what you print and how often you print. Additionally, individual printers vary in quality depending on their features. You’ll want to read the details and reviews on any printer you’re considering.

We ended up purchasing two printers: a low-cost laser printer for black and white printing and an inkjet for color printing. I’m frugal, so I didn’t want to purchase two, but we believe this will work best for us. My husband prints many work-related documents (some are quite long) that only require black ink. Likewise, I print many documents for use homeschooling my kids that only require black ink. Having a laser printer means we can print high-quality black and white documents at an affordable price. However, we do regularly print color documents and print on different types of paper (such as glossy paper). We will still be able to print these because we have the inkjet printer.

Which type of printer do you have in your home? What do you like and dislike about it?
