I’ve always made a point to ask my husband about his day when he gets home in the evening. I know I’ve done this faithfully because my precious children now usually ask before I can! When we sit down to dinner, one (or both) of my older girls will often turn to him and ask, “How was your day, Daddy?”
Whether I ask the question or one of my kids asks, his answer is usually the same: “It was fine.” Technically he answers the question, and his answer may be entirely accurate. However, I ask because I genuinely want to know what happened in his day and how he is doing. I’m beginning to think that I need to ask a different question if I want a more detailed answer!
As I do frequently, I began making a list. In this case it was a list of alternative ways to ask my husband how his day has gone.
(Click on the image to view and download a larger, printable version of the list.)
My husband may answer these questions with few words, but I believe these answers will provide greater insight into what happened in his day and how he is feeling. Of course, these questions aren’t specific to marriage, so they are also great to use when visiting with friends and family members.
What questions do you ask your spouse at the end of the day?

I love this idea. We focus on asking our kids these types of questions but not our spouses.
Definitely pinning and creating something like this for our home.

It’s so important that we connect with both our kids and our spouses, so these are definitely helpful! I hope you find questions that work for your family. 🙂

I appreciate seeing this list. Too often I resort to the bland question, “So, how was your day?” Fine. How was yours? Fine. It’s almost like just saying hello. ha. We do talk more despite my blah question, but it’d be nice to have a better opener like these you suggest here. 🙂

Using these can definitely get the conversation started and generate some interesting discussions.
Thanks for stopping by, Lisa.
