A Mess-Free Way to Pit Cherries

I was thrilled last week to see that our local grocery stores have sweet cherries in stock. My daughters love these, but they’re only available for a few months of the year. Thus, I eagerly added a bag to the “cart” of my curbside grocery order. Then I hesitated.

Tired of getting juice everywhere when you pit cherries? This simple DIY splash guard will allow you to pit cherries with minimal mess.

I didn’t have a cherry pitter, so pitting cherries had always taken a bit of work. It certainly wasn’t hard to pit them by cutting them open with a knife, but it was inconvenient to do so with three hungry kids begging me to get lunch on the table. I wasn’t going to skip the cherries—they’re too yummy and nutritious—so I decided to purchase an affordable cherry pitter on Amazon.

Pitting cherries is now easy, but it can get pretty messy. Sometimes juice squirts all around as the pitter pushes the pit out of the cherry. As I was contemplating how to avoid making so much mess, I noticed my youngest child’s snack cup sitting on the counter.

It occurred to me that a larger bowl with a lid that contained slits might work to contain the mess. The next day I experimented a bit and came up with the following.

I used a utility knife to cut a semicircular opening in the top of a 32 oz. plastic food storage tub. I made sure the opening was just large enough to accommodate the cherry pitter.

With the lid securely in place on the tub, I placed a cherry in the pitter and inserted it through the semicircular opening. I pitted the cherry and pulled the pitter back out of the opening. Voila! I had a way to pit cherries with minimal mess.

Sometimes very simple things are effective at making our lives so much easier! Hopefully this splash guard will help you minimize the mess of pitting cherries or inspire you to come up with a DIY solution of your own.

I’d love to hear about any DIY solutions you’ve come up with recently (even if they have nothing to do with pitting cherries). What creative things have you done to solve problems around your home?

We broke down and bought a cherry pitter last year and while I still don’t love the job it does make it so much easier for everyone to snack on them.
