All-Purpose Seasoning

April 15, 2019 By Shannon This post may contain affiliate links and this site uses cookies. Click here for details.

I end up pulling the same spices out of the pantry almost every night when I make dinner. This is because I season most of our dishes in the same way. I realized some time ago that it would be a lot simpler to go ahead and mix these spices together and keep them in a jar or canister so I have a ready-to-use mixture.

This all-purpose seasoning, made with ingredients you likely have on hand, adds a wonderful flavor to your favorite dishes.

I finally got around to doing this! I believe this mixture is somewhat similar to varieties of seasoned salt that you can buy in stores. However, depending on what brand you buy, those sometimes contain sugar, MSG, and a variety of anti-caking agents. Additionally, those tend to be super high in sodium. This one contains sodium, of course, because it contains salt. However, it is not seasoned salt (where there is a lot of salt and just a little of other spices); it is an all-purpose seasoning that contains salt.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sea salt
  • 1 cup ground black pepper
  • 3/4 cup garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup onion powder
  • 1/2 cup paprika
  • 4 teaspoons celery seed

Instructions

Stir all of the ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Yield: nearly 4 cups of the seasoning.

Notes

As I noted above, I use this on just about everything. I use it to season chicken, beef, pork, and fish. I sprinkle it in soups. I use it in casseroles, pasta dishes, and gravies. I add a bit to mashed potatoes and hash browns.

I don’t measure a specific amount, I just add it “until it feels right.” Basically, I’ve used this mixture enough that I simply know how much to use! When you use it, you’ll want to start with a little and then taste your dish, adding more of the mixture in small quantities until you like the flavor. Remember that this isn’t seasoned salt—it has high proportions of other spices—so it will not make your dishes super salty, but it could make them a little spicy if you add too much.

Do you tend to season a lot of your dishes in the same way? If so, how do you season them?

I don’t add any salt to my cooking if I can help it because my husband salts his food without tasting it first. He has always done this so I don’t want to add any more salt to his diet. Onion and garlic powder are always good seasonings. This is a good idea.

      Hi Sylvia,
That would be a good reason to avoid adding salt during cooking! You could definitely make something like this and leave out the salt entirely. You know he will salt his at the table and you can always add a bit of salt if you’ve tasted the dish and think it needs a bit.

I use much the same, but not the celery seed. I like dill, Italian seasoning and dehydrated onion flakes too quite a bit.

The celery seed is definitely the least important of the ingredients, Melissa.
We use a lot of Italian seasoning, too!

Love this idea; but I too would omit the salt since my husband salts everything (without tasting first). I had to laugh when I saw that comment already.. maybe it’s a guy thing? Thanks for sharing with us at Encouraging Hearts and Home. Pinned.

Perhaps it is! It would definitely still be good without the salt.
