Christmas in July: Christmas Songs that Are Great for Year-Round Listening

It’s no secret that I enjoy Christmas music. In fact, I enjoy it so much that sometimes I’ll listen to it in the middle of the summer. I haven’t done that yet this year, but when I was listening to it last winter I noticed that there are a number of Christmas songs that aren’t all that Christmassy. What I mean by this is that the lyrics aren’t all that specific to Christmas—they are suitable for other times of the year.

There are a number of fabulous Christmas songs that aren’t specific to Christmas. It’s great to listen to these songs at other times of the year!

When it comes to these songs, there’s no reason we shouldn’t listen to them outside of the Christmas season. What are some of these songs? Here are 8 examples.

Christmas songs that are great year round

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus – Meredith Andrews

The song featured above is a modern take on the classic hymn by Charles Wesley. The traditional hymn is great as is, but I also appreciate this version by Meredith Andrews.

Favorite lyrics:
Come, thou long expected Jesus
Born to set thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in thee
Israel’s strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart

God With Us – We Are Messengers

Favorite lyrics:
He is with us always, in our joy and in our pain
In the lonely midnight, keep looking up
Love has come, God with us
Love has come, God with us

Advent Hymn – Christy Nockels

Favorite lyrics:
Dark and cheerless is the morn
‘Till Your love in me is born
Joyless is the evening sun
’till Emmanuel has come

Light of the World – Lauren Daigle

Favorite lyrics:
He is the song for the suffering
He is Messiah, the Prince of Peace has come
He has come, Emmanuel

How Many Kings – Downhere

Favorite lyrics:
Cause how many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?

Prince Of Heaven – Hillsong Worship

Favorite lyrics:
We can know Him this Prince of Peace
In light of mercy confess our sin
Lay our burdens at Jesus’ feet
And with gladness sing

His Name Shall Be – Matt Redman

Favorite lyrics:
One name above all others
one name that came to save us
Oh sing, His name is, His name is Jesus

Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come – Lincoln Brewster

Favorite lyrics:
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love

When I listen to these songs, I don’t really feel like I’m listening to Christmas music. The lyrics are not only encouraging and inspiring, but they turn my focus to the work the Lord is doing on earth today and to His second coming.

Are you familiar with any of these songs? What other Christmas songs that are suitable for year-round listening can you recommend?
