I looked through several old cookbooks as we were preparing for a garage sale several weeks ago. I did end up parting with a few of the books, but I kept many of them because they contain recipes I still want to try! One recipe I wanted to try was this recipe for Creamy Lemon Pepper Chicken.
The cookbook (the 2023 edition of Taste of Home’s Quick Cooking Annual Recipes) refers to this dish as Chicken in Sour Cream Sauce. My husband is not a fan of sour cream as a garnish, but he generally doesn’t notice if sour cream is cooked into a dish (this is the case with the Creamy Ground Turkey and Noodle Casserole that I make). Thus, I kept the sour cream, but made a few other tweaks to the ingredients. The result was this delicious, easy-to-prepare dish that was perfect for my whole family.
Ingredients
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 ½ teaspoons lemon pepper seasoning
- 1 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 can (10 oz.) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup chicken broth
- ½ lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- Prepared noodles
Instructions
Combine the salt, pepper, paprika, and lemon pepper seasoning; rub over the chicken. Place the chicken in the slow cooker. In a bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and chicken broth. Add the sliced mushrooms and chopped onion, then pour over the chicken. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked. Yield: 6 servings.
Notes
This meal is super easy to prepare, which makes it a great option for a busy day. It is prepared using inexpensive staples, and it has a mild, savory flavor that makes it great for the whole family. This means it is a winner in my house!
If you like your dishes to have a stronger flavor, then you can add some garlic, a little more lemon pepper seasoning, or a dash of cayenne pepper. We served our Creamy Lemon Pepper Chicken over noodles, but it would also be good over rice, mashed potatoes, or even on its own.
What new dishes have you tried lately? Were any of them big hits with your family?

The last new recipe we tried was for a pork chop marinade a couple weeks ago and it was a huge hit with the family. This looks yummy!

Sounds tasty, Joanne. We rarely eat pork chops, but I may make them soon because it would be nice to have something different.
