The home we currently own was built in the 1980s. When we purchased the house several years ago, the most unsightly room in it was the full bathroom in the upstairs hallway. Unfortunately, after nearly five years, this bathroom remained the most unsightly part of the house!
Our original intention was to completely redo the bathroom, but various others things came up that used our time and money. I’ve always bathed our kids in the large, deep tub that is in the en suite bathroom of our master bedroom, so it was easy to also use this bathroom for brushing their teeth and using the potty. I rarely thought about the ugly bathroom because it was “out of sight, out of mind.” However, last spring we decided to sell our house.
No potential buyer would look at that bathroom and say, “Wow, this is exactly what I’m looking for!” Thus, we decided to make some simple changes to highlight the bathroom’s potential.
I put new caulk in the shower and removed rust spots from the light fixture.
I removed the wallpaper border, painted the walls a light gray color, and put new white paint on the trim. I was grateful to have my mom’s help with this!
I purchased new towel racks (towel rings for hand towels and a double towel bar for bath towels) so they are now all the same finish. I also placed some small shelves above the toilet and changed out the shower curtain.
All of these changes were affordable and easy. We already had the shower curtain and caulk, so all I had to buy was paint, towel racks, and a set of small shelves. All of these items together cost me about $110.
We replaced the toilet with a water conserving model when we first purchased the house. However, we didn’t replace the flooring or the countertop then or during this little update. These are items that the family who buys our home will want to do eventually. However, for the time being, these updates make the bathroom look a lot fresher and will help house hunters see what potential the space has.
After completing this, all I can say is that I should have done it earlier! It was so simple and affordable that I should have done it five years ago so that we could have enjoyed this space all along instead of it being an eyesore. Regardless, it is done now and it looks wonderful!
What DIY projects have you tackled recently? I’d love to hear about them!

That’s a great way to put it, Mary!
I don’t cringe each time I walk into the room. It’s so much nicer!

It looks great! It’s amazing sometimes how small little changes can make a big impact.

Yes, Joanne, and these really were simple changes!

That looks so good! It’s amazing how your little changes here and there really changed the whole look of it. I’m not a big home improvement person, but even that looks like something I could do 😉
(thankfully, though, I don’t think I’ll need to anytime soon-the person who sold us our house completely renovated the interior-we found an old house listing online once, and were shocked to see how different it looks now-so there aren’t many things I could think to change at the moment).

Simple changes are pretty much all I do…I’m really not gifted in the DIY or home decorating departments. Nevertheless, I’m pleased with how this turned out.
