Winter 2013 officially begins this weekend! It’s the little things about winter that gladden my heart and put a smile on my face.
Christmas. An opportunity to celebrate the birth of our Savior is reason enough to get excited. However, I can hardly contain my excitement when time with family, cookies, Christmas carols, candy, lights, and decorations get added to the celebration.
Warm drinks. A mug of hot cocoa, apple cider, or tea is the perfect remedy when the cold air leaves me feeling chilled. What’s even better is enjoying one of these drinks in the glow of a fire burning in a fireplace. Of course, if you’re like me and don’t have a fireplace, the flame of a candle will have to suffice!
Snow. Snow is beautiful and fascinating. Once it blankets the landscape, it turns even the most boring of yards into playgrounds for the young (and young at heart) to build snowmen and engage in snowball fights. It serves as a powerful reminder that though our “sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” because of God’s grace (Isaiah 1:18).
The slower pace. Once the hustle and bustle of Christmas has passed, life often assumes a slower pace that reflects the quiescence seen in nature. This provides me with an opportunity to rest, recuperate, and prepare for the events of spring.
What little things are bringing joy to your heart this winter?

Thank you for this! We live in Canada where winters are very long, so it is good to be reminded of the little things that are a blessing!

Oh, I bet it would be hard to feel excited about the little things of winter when they’re present for so long!
I hope you’re able to see them with fresh eyes today.
