Printable List of Alternative Gift Exchange Ideas

Each year around Christmas, many of you stop by and check out a post I wrote several years ago about alternative gift exchanges. This post has inspired many of you to try out some non-traditional approaches to giving gifts! This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us will be having non-traditional Christmas celebrations. Because of things like social distancing and financial hardships brought on by job losses, you may want to try something different this Christmas.

If this is true for you, then you may find this printable list of alternative gift exchange ideas to be very helpful.

(Click on the image to view a larger, printable version of the list.)

There are so many ways to do Christmas gift exchanges! Have fun with your loved ones trying some of these creative options. Not all of these are good choices when trying to observe social distancing, but many are. For example, you could do a Secret Santa gift exchange or exchange recipe baskets and leave these on the recipients’ doorsteps instead of exchanging them in person. You can even gather on Zoom and open the gifts “together” (this is how we’re doing a gift exchange with our Bible study group). Ideas on the list that aren’t compatible with social distancing may be things you want to try in future years.

Regardless of how you exchange gifts this year, I hope you find safe, meaningful ways to celebrate the holiday.

What additional ideas can you add? What are some creative ways you and your loved ones have exchanged gifts?

My extended family on my husband’s side is doing a Secret Santa gift exchange with a $20 limit. There is an app for this that does the “drawing” and allows the receiver to list a few items they would love. We did this last year and it was so fun and gifts so thoughtful and creative that this year 2 of my own family are participating, too.

That sounds like a super useful app! I love that there is a place for each recipient to list some gift ideas. How fun!
