Last week I shared about the wedding vow word cloud that I made to display the vows my husband and I exchanged when we got married. It’s definitely a cute wall hanging, but why did I want to display our wedding vows?
Our vows weren’t unique and there was nothing magical about them. However, they were the vows—the solemn promises—we made to one another when we got married. Though we loved each other and meant every word of our vows when we spoke them, we’ve faced challenges in our marriage.
If the divorce rate in this country is any indication, then other couples also face challenges and many of their marriages succumb to these. If there is anything I’ve learned from being married, it’s that love isn’t sufficient to sustain a marriage. Spouses must be committed to one another. My husband and I were committed to each other when we exchanged vows. I’ve hung the words of these vows on a wall in our home so we have a daily reminder of that commitment.
I’m not saying that hanging your wedding vows where you see them daily will divorce proof your marriage. That’s not true at all. However, I think there are benefits to seeing your vows each day. When you’re stressed out because you’re having trouble making ends meet financially, it’s helpful to remember that you committed to be with your spouse “for richer for poorer.” When your spouse is facing a devastating health diagnosis, it’s helpful to remember you committed to be with him or her “in sickness and in health.” When you are dissatisfied with your marriage and feel tempted to connect with a friend of the opposite sex to alleviate that dissatisfaction, it’s helpful to remember that you committed to forsake all others and “be faithful to him/her as long as you both shall live.”
This is why I display our vows. I need the reminder of my commitment. It doesn’t matter what is going on around us or how I feel about my husband right now, I committed to be his wife. Every time I walk into our bedroom, I see our vows and I remember this.
I love how I’ve displayed our vows (find out how to make your own wedding vow word cloud here), but there are a lot of other creative ways to do this. Here are a handful I’ve seen around the internet.
Tiffany from Seeing Sunshine framed wedding photos on which she superimposed her vows.
Amanda at A Crafted Passion made a wedding vow wood sign.
Rachel at Loving Life made wedding vow chalkboard art.
Maggie at The Love Nerds made wedding vow subway art.
Katie from Bower Power framed a large piece of paper on which she printed her wedding vows.
These are some awesome ideas! I love how there are options that will fit in various decors. If you don’t want to take on a DIY project, there are lots of options for ordering personalized wedding vow art.
Do you display your wedding vows? How do you have them displayed?
