Why to Eat Pie the Night Before Thanksgiving

November 18, 2019 By Shannon This post may contain affiliate links and this site uses cookies. Click here for details.

Pie is the traditional dessert to eat after Thanksgiving dinner, but the best time to eat pie may actually be the night before Thanksgiving.

We are often too full to eat pie after Thanksgiving dinner. Why not eat these pies a little early?

I don’t know what it’s like in your house, but we tend to be pretty full after Thanksgiving dinner. It’s common for us to not even be hungry for dessert after eating turkey, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, etc. My sister’s family found a creative solution to this problem: They eat pie on Thanksgiving Eve!

Everyone gathers around with pie and other desserts and has a time of laid-back fellowship. In addition to having room to eat the pie, I see a few other benefits to this.

  • You get to eat dessert first. Who doesn’t want to dive into the delicious desserts early?
  • The pies don’t take up precious oven space on Thanksgiving Day. The space in the oven is coveted on Thanksgiving. If you prepare the pies early so you can eat them on Thanksgiving Eve, then they’ll be out of the way.
  • Those who want dessert after Thanksgiving dinner will still be able to eat pie. There’s no reason family members can’t have pie for dessert on Thanksgiving Day. Just be sure to make enough pie that there will be leftovers.

I believe this tradition is a good fit for my family, so this year we’ll be eating our dessert first. All I have to do is decide which pies I want to make!

Berry pie

Would your family like this sweet tradition? What other non-traditional things do you do when celebrating Thanksgiving?

The smartest thing we ever did for the big holidays was to make them a day ahead. We devote the entire day to putting everything together so that all we have to do is bake and cook while the house it’s full of company, no more being left out of visiting because of being alone in the kitchen! We even peel the potatoes and let them soak in water ready to boil. I make deviled eggs and mix the filling then but don’t actually fill them until the big day. The worst part of this plan is having to find room to store it for an extra day!

I can see storage being an issue. This is definitely a smart way to prepare things!

I love this idea! What a fun tradition; and you are so right.. I pretty much never have room for pie or dessert after our meal.

It’s like a holiday just for pie! That is an awesome idea.
